Dolphins are marine mammals related to porpoises and whales. The killer whale is in fact one of the approximately 40 species of dophin. The most common species is the bottlenose dolphin.

They mostly live in shallow seas, eating mostly fish and squid, and evolved relatively recenty, a mere 10 million years ago. Their intelligence and playful nature makes them popular in human cultures.

A group of dolphins is known as a “school” or a “pod”. Male dolphins are named “bulls”, females are named “cows”. Baby dolphins are called “calves”.

They use echolocation to sense their surroundings by making clicks and listening to the reflections. Their clicks are among the loudest sounds made by any marine mammals. They have good eyesight and breath through a blowhole on the top of their head. Their brains are different in structure from most land animals.

They have been known to actively protect people and whales. They sleep with only one half of their brain at a time.

For more information, see the Wikipedia page on Dophins

Pandas are endangered. The Giant Panda has less than 3000 individuals left in the wild, with under 300 in captivity, and is officially listed as a “conservation reliant endangered species”.

The giant panda is descended from carnivorous species, although its diet is almost entirely bamboo. It now only lives in a few mountain ranges in central China, having been driven out of all of it’s lowland habitats due to deforestation and human habitation.

Giant pandas are the only bears which never hibernate, because their food source is so low in nutritional value that it does not allow them to build up enough excess fat to survive hibernation. This problem is made worse by the fact that their bodies are built to be carnivorous, so they can’t extract all that much of the nutrition that is in their bamboo food.

Their very low birth rate also makes it difficult for them to survive their endangered status. See the Wikipedia Giant Panda page for more info.

The Red Panda which also feeds mainly on bamboo, is a small tree-living mammal. It is not a bear and not closely related to any other living species. It lives in temperate forests in the Himalayas. It is classified as “vulnerable”, with less than 10,000 individuals alive today.
