Dolphins are marine mammals related to porpoises and whales. The killer whale is in fact one of the approximately 40 species of dophin. The most common species is the bottlenose dolphin.

They mostly live in shallow seas, eating mostly fish and squid, and evolved relatively recenty, a mere 10 million years ago. Their intelligence and playful nature makes them popular in human cultures.

A group of dolphins is known as a “school” or a “pod”. Male dolphins are named “bulls”, females are named “cows”. Baby dolphins are called “calves”.

They use echolocation to sense their surroundings by making clicks and listening to the reflections. Their clicks are among the loudest sounds made by any marine mammals. They have good eyesight and breath through a blowhole on the top of their head. Their brains are different in structure from most land animals.

They have been known to actively protect people and whales. They sleep with only one half of their brain at a time.
