Here are some black bear facts. Black bears are fascinating and intelligent animals. The name “black bear” is usually used by Americans to refer to the America black bear, although there is an Asian black bear too, which is closely related to the American black bear. The black bear is not so closely related to the other bear species which live in America.
They are omnivores, eating a wide variety of different foods including berries, shoots, nuts, honey, insects, fish and meat. They live in forests typically, and are not an endangered species currently.
It is widespread through most of Canada, and lives in certain parts of US states. Their size an vary by as much as 30% with different seasons, and black bears which live on the east coast tend to be heavier than those on the west coast.
Their fur is much softer than that of other bears in America, and their color can be white, cream reddish-brown or brown and even blueish-black as well as black. They swim well and can climb trees.
Black bears avoid interaction with brown bears by being more active in the day, and only rarely come into contact with cougars although they will steal their kills when possible. Black bears rarely attack people, although people hunt and kill thousands of black bears each year, and sometimes even eat their meat.
