Some of the polar bear populations are in decline currently, although more than half of the sub-populations are not in decline. This is mainly due to global warming, which are reducing the ice sheets which are the polar bears main hunting grounds.

Hunting was the main factor in the reduction of polar bear numbers, until recently, although it is still a problem, and considered unsustainable by scientists. Polution was also a problem, but is decreasing in effect on polar bears, now, due to regulations banning some chemicals.

If global warming continues at its current rate, the polar bear might be extinct in about 100 years time, although scientists disagree on this, some saying that the populations are managed well enough to survive. Although polar bears did learn to adapt to warmer times in the past, their currently smaller population sizes, and the rapid rate of current global warming might makethem extinct before they can adapt this time.

Unfortunately, legal protection of polar bears is oppsed by oil and gas interests, and illegal poaching is common in some areas such as Russia.

Polar bears are classified as marine mammals, because they spend most of their time on the sea ice hunting for the seals which live on and under this sea ice. As this sea ice melts due to global warming, the polar bears are less able to find enough food.

Here are some black bear facts. Black bears are fascinating and intelligent animals. The name “black bear” is usually used by Americans to refer to the America black bear, although there is an Asian black bear too, which is closely related to the American black bear. The black bear is not so closely related to the other bear species which live in America.

They are omnivores, eating a wide variety of different foods including berries, shoots, nuts, honey, insects, fish and meat. They live in forests typically, and are not an endangered species currently.

It is widespread through most of Canada, and lives in certain parts of US states. Their size an vary by as much as 30% with different seasons, and black bears which live on the east coast tend to be heavier than those on the west coast.

Their fur is much softer than that of other bears in America, and their color can be white, cream reddish-brown or brown and even blueish-black as well as black. They swim well and can climb trees.

Black bears avoid interaction with brown bears by being more active in the day, and only rarely come into contact with cougars although they will steal their kills when possible. Black bears rarely attack people, although people hunt and kill thousands of black bears each year, and sometimes even eat their meat.

Killer whale facts . . . killer whales are fascinating animals. Their scientific name is “Orcinus Orca” and they are commonly referred to as “Orca”. They are toothed whales (unlike most other large whales), and can be found in most of the world’s oceans, from cold arctic and antarctic waters to warm tropical seas.

They are carnivores and eat a wide variety of food, although particular individuals will often specialise in a particular type of food, such as fish, seals or even larger whales. They are social animals and their matriarchal society is the most stable of any animal and can include learning of complex hunting abilities which could be described as a culture.

Some killer-whale populations are under threat currently. Killer whales do not attack people in the wild.
