Wildlife Art by artist :- Agasse, Jaques-Laurent (Apr 1767 - Dec 1849)

Agasse, Jaques-Laurent

Agasse, one of the most celebrated animal painters from the end of the 18th to the beginning of the 19th century, was born in Geneva and educated in Paris. He arrived in England due to the happy accident of painting a dog which was comissioned by an Englishman, who was so pleased with the painting that he brought Agasse back to England with him.

His vetinary education in Paris gave his a detailed knowledge of the anatomy of animals, particularly horses, and it is for painting horses that he is best know, although he also painted a variety of other subjects including people and dogs. He painted to satisfy his natural genius, which unfortunately did not seem to bring him enough financial gain. His art was unusually realistic for the period.
