Catesby, Mark.Catesby, an English naturalist, was one of the earliest New World wildlife artists who documented the flora and fauna of America and presented Europeans with a view of both the economic potential of the New world, and the natural wonders of a new land not yet fully explored and only beginning to be populated by the settlers. Catesby became interested in natural history through a friend, and studied in London before travelling in Virginia and the West Indies. After returning to England with plant specimins, he travelled back to America a few years later, settling in Charleston and travelling extensively collecting plants and birds. In 1743 Catesby finished publishing his "Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands", the first published description of the natural history of North America. It included 220 plates of birds, reptiles and amphibians, fish, insects, and mammals, the illustrations of which he etched himself.
