Dürer, AlbrechtA German artist and mathematician, Durer established his reputation early in life, and is currently known as the greatest artist of the Northern European Renaissance. His best-known wildlife artworks are his rhinoceros and hare (see below). He also painted religious works and self-portraits, and his work often reflected the apocalyptic spirit of the age. His watercolours of the landscapes painted during his travels in Europe are the first known pure landscape art in the Western tradition. Durer's father was a goldsmith, and his godfather left goldsmithing to work as a printer, and became extrememly successful doing so. Durer showed an exceptional talent for drawing from an early age. He studied printing in Venice, as well as learning the recent developments in perspective, and anatomy and was obviously influenced by artists there, the results of which he integrated with his Northern European influence. Although known for his woodblock prints, the actual craftwork was almost certainly done by others, from Durer's drawings. His engravings of animals and other subjects made him famous throughout Europe. He focussed on printmaking, as it offered more income than painting for the time spent. His artworks have been a great influence on many artists who came after him. click here for the Wikipedia page on Durer, including portraits and many other artworks.
