Wildlife Art by artist :- Hicks, Edward (Apr 1780 - Aug 1849)

Hicks, Edward

Born in Pensylvania, Hicks was a devout Quaker, and known for his American folk art.

His best-known works are the 62 existing versions of "Peaceble Kingdom" which illustrates a verse from the Book of Isaiah.

His work as an artist began when he was an apprentice coach-builder, painting ornaments on coaches. His painting was sometimes attacked by others as being "worldly work" in conflict with his religious faith. He resolved this dilema by focussing on illustrating concepts from the Bible, although he also painted farm life, local events and landscapes.

Hick's "Noah's Ark" shows that he featured the farm animals that he could paint accurately, while putting less attention on the foriegn animals that he knew a lot less about (and thus paints with less realism). A stylised and symbolic illustration, full of character and meaning.
