Wildlife Art by artist :- Keulemans, John Gerrard (Jun 1842 - Mar 1912)

Keulemans, John Gerrard.

Keulemans was a Dutch wildlife illustrator who later moved to London. He illustrated many of the important wildlife books of the time, and travelled in Africa. His prodidgious and consistant output of extremely detailed scientific illustrations led to him being regarded as one of the foremost illustrators of his time. Of course this defines him somewhat differently from a creative artist as such and some critics seem to fail to understand the aim of his work in that context.

Most of his works were duplicated using hand-colored lithographs. Slight inconsistancies of the colors between the reproductions (done by assistants) and the real birds are sometimes present. Keulemans illustrated many birds now extinct, including the Great Auk (see below).
