Wildlife Art by artist :- Le Vaillant, François (1753 - Nov 1824)

Le Vaillant, François

This wildlife artist was an explorer, collector and ornithologist. He was born in Dutch Guiana (Surinam), the son of the French Consul there. In 1781 he travelled to South Africa, and collected birds while there, and on travels from that location, for three years. Five books were published from his collections of birds, yet he refused to classify them according to the established methods of the time, and only gave them French names, some of which are still in use.
