Wildlife Art by artist :- Lewin, William (1747 - 1795)

Lewin, William.

Born in London, Lewin specialised in natural history painting. He spent twenty years working on the book "The Birds of Great Britain, with Their Eggs, Accurately Figured", which was finally published in 1789. He painted each page by hand for the first edition of 60 books (323 watercolors each book), and the second edition was rendered in etchings, completed by his sons.

"A Heron, from "The Birds of Great Britain and Their Eggs" ", a fine example of bird illustration, accurate and full of character. (click the image to buy it).

"The Birds of Great Britain, First Edition, 1789-1794". Although aesthetically weak to modern eyes, Lewin's illustrations were a significant contribution to early wildlife illustration. This illustration protrays well the character of this enigmatic and curious bird. (click the image to buy it).
