Wildlife Art by artist :- Marc, Franz (Feb 1880 – Mar 1916).

Marc, Franz.

One of the foremost artists of the German Expressionist movement Franz Marc was born in Munich to a father who was a professional lanscape painter. He painted mainly animals including many horses as well as foxes, dogs, a tiger, etc. His paintings have sold for higher prices than any other German Expressionist.

Influences of futurists and cubists turned Marc's work towards abstraction, as well as being strongly concerned with emotions and using of intense primaray colors. As well as painting, Marc also worked in print, using woodcut and lithography.

"Fate of the animals", painted in 1913, is probably Marc's most famous painting, and is strongly cubist and abstract. A bright and brash painting, full of energy and movement, the strong reds contrast well with the darker greens and blues. (click the image to buy it).

"Fox", also painted in 1931, is similarly cubist and almost abstract, although also obviously recognisable as a subject. The painting clearly depicts the refined lines of the fox's character, and is almost gentle in comparison with some of Marc's other works. A fine example of cubist wildlife art (click the image to buy it).

Marc's paintings "Forest with Squirrels" and "tiger" are typical of his cubist-influenced works. The curves of squirrel tails contrast well with the precise lines of the cubist forms and treetrunks, the use of texture and line conveys the concept of the movement of the squirrels amongst the heavy straight trunks of the forest trees.

Tiger captures the power of the king of cats with the heavy dramatic lines and the boldness of the forms. Full of character and mood. (click the image to buy it).

"Monkey Frieze" shows elements of cubism, near-abstraction, and design influences. A cleverly created combination of recognisable subjects with abstract design-like pattern elements and cubist influences. Somehow Marc conveys the character of the subject well with his use of form and line. (click the image to buy it).
