Wildlife Art by artist :- Stubbs, George (Aug 1724 to Jul 1806)

Stubbs, George.

A mostly self-taught British animal artist, Stubbs is best known for his paintings of horses. He did also paint some wildlife paintings including a zebra, a moose, tigers, lions, giraffes, monkeys, and rhinoceroses, which he was able to observe in private zoos, as well as painting dogs and people. He studied anatomy (particularly of horses) and illustrated anatomy books. Also travelled to Italy where he succeeded in his aim of convincing himself that nature was always superior to ancient Greek or Roman art.

One of his favourite themes was a horse being threatened by a lion. Although the horse is considered to be wild, this theme also fits with the era during which he was working, which was exploring the edge between the human world and nature, with wildlife art just starting to emerge beyond the purely subjective humanistic viewpoints which had dominated art for many centuaries. His use of light to add drama to a scene is also characteristic of his period.

"Bay Horse and White Dog", one of his most famous works, is a typical Stubbs painting. A fine piece of animal art by this famous painter (click the image to buy it).

His zebra is one of the most popular of his wildlife paintings, and demonstrates his practice of painting animals in zoos, adding imagined landscapes behind them . . . in this case, the landscape is atypical for the zebra supposedly in it, as well as being, like many of his other animal paintings, somewhat stiff and artificially posed.

However it is still a fine piece of romantic wildlife art, with the characteristic beauty in the use of light and mood. (click the image to buy it).

Here are two different paintings of Stubbs' favourite themes, lion and horse, showing the characteristic romantic dramatic and emotional protrayal of the conflict between the wildness of natural and domestication. (click the image to buy it).
