Stubbs, George.A mostly self-taught British animal artist, Stubbs is best known for his paintings of horses. He did also paint some wildlife paintings including a zebra, a moose, tigers, lions, giraffes, monkeys, and rhinoceroses, which he was able to observe in private zoos, as well as painting dogs and people. He studied anatomy (particularly of horses) and illustrated anatomy books. Also travelled to Italy where he succeeded in his aim of convincing himself that nature was always superior to ancient Greek or Roman art. One of his favourite themes was a horse being threatened by a lion. Although the horse is considered to be wild, this theme also fits with the era during which he was working, which was exploring the edge between the human world and nature, with wildlife art just starting to emerge beyond the purely subjective humanistic viewpoints which had dominated art for many centuaries. His use of light to add drama to a scene is also characteristic of his period. click here to see some other paintings by Stubbs, on Wikipedia Commons.
